The figures relate to cases documented at psychiatric units in Denmark where the depression was so severe that patients had to be hospitalised.Depression cases at the hospitals rose by eight per cent after the end of daylight saving time.Professor Seren Ostergaard, from Aarhus University Hospital in the Danish city of Aarhus, said the psychological effect would apply to all levels of depression, not just severe cases in hospitals, according to a report on Science Daily. The main reason for the surge in depression is thought to be the sudden onset of darker nights and also negative thoughts that this is now the start of a long period of winter gloom.
